History and Purpose

Leadership Franklin, developed by the Fanning Institute for Leadership and Community Development at the University of Georgia, is committed to bettering the Franklin County and Northeast Georgia community by focusing on local empowerment, leadership development, and skills transfer that enable our community to achieve business, civic, and educational goals.

Implemented by the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce in 1997, this dynamic leadership program has been committed to bringing sustainable community transformation to the Northeast Georgia area for years. Participants in Leadership Franklin are empowered to be proactive leaders in every area of our community.

Leadership Training

Skills taught through Leadership Franklin are keys in personal career development within any organization or company. One tenet of this leadership program holds that no one group or person has all the necessary skills, knowledge, talents, and experience required of leadership today. Exposure to diverse leadership styles and philosophies is a critical component of leadership development. In keeping with this tenet, uniquely qualified local leaders teach each of the leadership modules in the course. These leaders bring their local expertise and perspective to the class.


The 6 topics of emphasis will be: Regional Economics, Agriculture, Health and Wellness, Education, Parks and Recreation and Government & Justice. The components that will be covered are Understanding Leadership, Communicating Effectively, Making Group Decisions, Building Communities through Collaboration, and Leading Community Change. Other classes include information and provide experiences regarding current and future economic development in Franklin County. The program will also include two small group meetings and two community leader observations.

Dates and Requirements

The next session of Leadership Franklin will be August 2- November 19, 2014. With the exception of the Regional Economics/Agriculture session, all classes will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 8:30 - 4:00 p.m. at various venues in the county. The final class will be our Graduation and will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 with location TBD.

In order to qualify for graduation, class members cannot miss more than 2 classes.

  • Cost of participating in Leadership Franklin is $250. This fee can be paid by the participant, the participant’s place of employment, or by sponsors.
  • Fees Include: Instructional and program materials, a participant’s notebook, dinner during each class, two tickets to the Graduation dinner and keynote address, one ticket to the Taste of Franklin, and a one-year membership to the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.
