Bank of Lavonia Buildings

The Bank of Lavonia was organized in 1895. In 1898, a beautiful marble front structure was built on the corner of Grogan and East Main Street. It stands today as a testament to the workmanship of the era with intricate design around the front door and windows.

Cromers Mill Covered Bridge

Named for the Cromer Family who settled on Nail’s Creek in 1845 and operated a woolen mill prior to the Civil War, the covered bridge over Nail’s Creek Road was built in 1907. The structure is one span wide and 132 feet long with a Town Lattice design.

Franklin County Courthouse

The historical Franklin County Courthouse is a national treasure. Built in 1906, this Neo-classical style building includes columns and buff-colored brick. One of the structure’s most impressive features is that it still serves as the county’s active courthouse today.

Lavonia Carnegie Library

The Lavonia Carnegie Library opened in 1911 as one of the first public libraries in Northeast Georgia and became the pride of Franklin County. It is a two-story Neo-classical structure and is one of the few Carnegie buildings that have been preserved as a library. The Lavonia Carnegie Library is still active and operates as part of the Athens Regional Library System.

Lavonia Depot

Like many other historical treasures of the region, the Lavonia Depot remains a part of modern life in Franklin County. Built in 1912, the Depot houses the Lavonia Welcome Center, the Lavonia Downtown Development Authority and Better Hometown Program, as well as artifacts from the period of the Depot’s construction and other historical pieces from Lavonia’s past.

Ty Cobb Museum

Explore the heyday of the greatest American hitter in baseball history, Tyrus Raymond Cobb, at the Ty Cobb Museum. Peruse rare photographs and artifacts, including Cobb’s 1907 American League batting champion medal. The museum tells the story of this native son’s legendary Major League Baseball career.

Vandiver Home

Down Highway 77 toward Hartwell sits the home of the late Samuel Ernest Vandiver, Jr. Vandiver was elected Governor of Georgia in 1958. After serving his term, he returned to the home and lived there until his death in 2005.
